SpeakEasy’s Annual Comic Book Show

Hey! On November 3rd – a Thursday – you can come see some excellent comics artwork & artists at The Gladstone Hotel. There’s a lot of talent over several rooms & I’m proud to be showing again. , & happy to see some faces I met last year, though I won’t have last year’s crutch of performing mini-interviews to help me mingle.

Bissette – An Open Letter

No one’s breaking down my door to draw for them, & that suits me fine. But, if they started to, I would reread Steve Bissette’s advice, then recommend my suitor/potential partner to read it, too.

The short essay is about how drawing is hard work. And really fucking time-consuming. You must respect the artist half of your comics team.

There may be no GN without the script, but there also won’t be a GN without good, suitable artwork. Equal ownership is where the party begins.

Kevin Smith

I love Kevin Smith, even when he lets me down (like he did with Zack & Miri Make a Porno; unbelievably, there are too many utterances of the word ‘fuck’ &, for a KS film, that’s a problem).

He created a brilliant new sub-genre (Jersey Girl) & didn’t even notice (are my daughter & I the only ones?), b/c he was lamely distracted by entertainment critics gossipmongers. I’m glad he’s finally found his feet again, & I hope the announcement of his retirement is as premature as when he said a Clerks sequel would never happen.

I’m looking forward to the new film, Red State. Kev, you got off to an excellent start.

I Heart Canada

I Heart Canada / I Maple Leaf Canada

It was a challenge to find, even with google, but I did it. This site explains how to make the ‘I heart Canada’ glyph… except it doesn’t. All it does is tell you to copy/pasta his glyph – █ ♥ █

If you want some actual knowledge & the ability to use this glyph without looking up his site all the time, you can learn its html codes.

█ followed by ♥ followed by █ (yes, the third one is the first one repeated).

These give you a rectangle, a heart & the first rectangle again.

You’re welcome.

Quotable

CBC Radio One

Check it out! I was quoted on the CBC: Know Your Rights blog. It’s an opinion regarding a hypothetical limit to freedom of expression in a classroom; I’m not saying my opinion’s best, but it makes sense to me.

Hey, after 133 episodes (& counting) of OpinioNation, y’all should be accustomed to me spewing my opinion all over the place.

Days 28-30 – The 30 Day Comic Book Challenge

Here we are at the home stretch!

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, possibly my favourite comics series of all time.

Day 28 – Favourite comic publisher.

Any publisher who produces creator-owned content.

Day 29 – A comic you thought you wouldn’t like, but ended up loving.

My first exposure to Sandman was waaaay back in my heroes-in-tights fandom days. I didn’t get it, so I didn’t like it.

I have learnt the error of my ways.

Day 30 – Your favourite run or series of all time.

This would have to be Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neill’s ongoing League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

To the best of my recollection – & I’m struggling here b/c I love so many different kinds of comics – it’s the one series that comes to mind of which I’ve read most releases & can’t think of a moment, an image or a word that has disappointed.

Days 26+27 – The 30 Day Comic Book Challenge

Young Liars - a comic book that should be adapted to filmDay 26 – A comic you wish they would make into a movie.

Young Liars.

I would’ve said The Boys, but we all know it’d be censored way down to PG-13, &, therefore, fucking pointless. Ditto Chester Brown’s The Playboy.

Day 27 – Favourite comic book movie.

Crumb.

If you made me stick to films that were explicitly adaptations, I’d struggle to choose Ghost World among many excellent works like American Splendor, A History of Violence, Road to Perdition, 300, etc.

And if you made me stick to superheroes, I don’t think I could choose. First of all, I’d classify films like Sin City, Constantine & V for Vendetta (all excellent) as superhero, which most people don’t.

The Keaton/Nicholson Batman film is incomparable. The first Spider-Man is wonderful, as is Watchmen, as are the Bale Batmans.
